If you are staying with a homestay family or in shared accommodation, ask your host to tell you how to get to Kingsway Institute. When you get to school on the first morning you will be given a proficiency test to assess your English level, and an orientation session to explain everything you need to know about your study. The first day will finish around midday, then your first class will begin on the next day at 9 am for morning students, and 4 pm for evening students. You will need to go to reception to check a list with your name and your classroom. Please ask in the Administration Office if you need any assistance.
Kingsway Institute provides multi-level General English, IELTS Preparation and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs leading to tertiary studies, or vocational, business and management courses for students wishing to be job-ready.
We are located on Level 3, 84 - 86 Mary Street Surry Hills, which is in the Central Business District (CBD) of Sydney. We are less than 5 minutes walk from Central train station, and we are about 5 minutes walk from the bus stops on Elizabeth Street. To check our location and directions please click here.
The minimum age for all of our courses is 18 years of age. Most students are in their 20s, but we have had students of all ages, up to 75!
General English (GE) is full-time language study for levels from Beginner to Upper-Intermediate and covers all skills – Reading, Speaking, Listening, Writing and Grammar. Students are in classes for 20 hours per week.
The IELTS Preparation course is for students who need to prepare for the IELTS test (either in the Academic Module or the General Training Module). Students improve their language proficiency (in all testing fields - reading, writing, listening and speaking) and test-taking techniques through skills development and graded test practice, focusing on each module and key task types.
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is our highest level and is designed primarily for students who have Provisional Admission to Undergraduate/Postgraduate programs of our partner providers. Undergraduate students need to achieve credit (65%) from the EAP1 class to meet English language entry requirements. For details please ask our administration manager on level 1.
At the end of each program students who pass its requirements receive a certificate stating the details of the program completed. For example, if you studied our General English course and achieved an Upper Intermediate level, you will receive a Kingsway certificate for Upper Intermediate level with details of your reading, writing, listening and speaking proficiency.
Full-time students are allowed to work in Australia. You cannot work until you have commenced your course in Australia. Once your course has commenced, you are permitted to work a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight when your course is in session, and for unlimited hours when your course is not in session. For more details, go to the DIBP websites here.
No, Kingsway is not a residential college. Many students choose to share apartments or live with an Australian family. If you are coming from overseas and seeking advice about accommodation, contact our administration or marketing office on Level 1 of the campus.
Yes, you can study either Vocational courses (Certificate I - IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma) or Undergraduate/Postgraduate courses with our partner providers (Direct Entry Pathway). For details, please contact our marketing office on Level 1.
